Games are what they are.  Systems are what they are.  Players of games play the games that exist.  Actors in systems act within the confines of same.  Those who are unhappy may wish to change the structures of the game, the structures of the system.  This may be done with the proper levers, the proper playing of the dynamics.  Gamers game or try to game the system for their own benefit.  Others are pin balls bouncing around the bells and whistles of the closed box.  They do what they do but the box is destiny.

All of our heroes do what they do.  Some reluctantly.  Some joyously.  Some perversely.  They cannot change the box .... well maybe if they're lucky, by authoritarian decree. Fascism was defeated, discredited.  Communism was imploded, discredited, by half.  Wars, a century, were in the service of damning the authoritarian monolith.  The core underpinnings of its grace was to have been eaten away by blood, sweat and tears. The rationals in a modern civilized world were to have no standing, no credence, no critical backing.  Enlightenment was coming.  Power was to be diffuse.

The authoritarian is.  It is the natural state against which the rest must grapple.  Order must be able to be maintained.  Laws must have a trust and an enforcement.  Competing interests must have access to the arenas of power.  Bread must not be the major issue.  Convenience, the major excuse.

Monolithic religion.  Monolithic states.  Two bit ideologues.  The rise is in the justifications or all.  These are acceptable things in the world.  The philosophies of life allow, encourage, demand them.  Power is also a desirable aim.  It is what the world runs upon. It is not an evil unto itself.  Strong figures are desirable in a tough world.

Demagoguery is a fine old, age old tried and true action, strategy, force, triumph.  The passions of the dissatisfied and seemingly disenfranchised lots who are not very easily fought, diminished, put aside or nullified come with hard charging purpose, hard charging anger, hard scrabble self importance.  The fight is to the fighters and the fighters love vessels that take them where they want to go.  A good and noble demagogue can well find his or her wave, mount it smoothly, ride it skillfully and hope to manage its crash with aplomb.  The wave can be a hard and forceful thing.  Still waters can be made quite rough.

The poor are all like minded and they congregate around each other in special areas or neighborhoods or amusement themed places and they play off of each other, interact and talk only to each other, live by the evil codes of their environments.  They lie, cheat and steal.  They vote their interests when they deem to vote, when those interests don't go against their smarmy ethos.  Some won't challenge the dominant in groups of thought in county or state or close minded heavens when their interests preclude them from hating the free thinking other.

Poverty is a special club with special memberships and homes for those strong enough to walk the streets of their Poverty land's Adventurelands.  Concentrated power in these amusement park paradises means that the poor there rule the streets, the deprivation.  Their numbers may be marginalized, however, when their happy little fiefdoms are just small in number compared to all other happy little fiefdoms, those of the righteous non poor.  In their wake they are just the Halloween amusement park.

All societies are authoritarian in nature until they are not.  Authoritarianism is the natural state of affairs for bodies politic and when and if there is a divergence from form it is because there have been fissures in the power structures, openings in the power vacuums, tools for the attacking of power given to those with less.  Atrophy beckons these anomalies over time  and the decay of nature just continually offers up ways for societies to become compromised in one way or the other.  There are little strong constituencies for power sharing.

If the system is broken then the only practical answer is to get behind interests and lobbies and sterling politicos who have it in their powers to maximize the gains that may be able to  benefit one most; that may hurt one least.   Pieces of the pie are up for grabs and those pieces need go to those who seek the proper transformation from representative democracy to shell game and power lanes and dictates and maneuver.

There are not stakeholders in a functioning American political system.  For there to be stakeholders enough folk have to view government as an entity that mediates disputes, solves problems, looks to ensure a common good, keeps any private or public power in check.  These are viable options for societies that need consensus with a strong base of voters feeling fortunate in their lives and futures rather than having the need to desperately cling to opposite aims.

Winning disputes.  Finding advantage in problems.  Playing musical chairs with a creation of a scrambling caste system.  Vie continually for the fruits, benefits and slave labors of power.  These are stakeholders in a system that favors bare knuckle paths to power for any individual or group that can use that can maximize positions gained in the absence of any real checks and balances upon usurpation of control.  These are the stakeholders, players of the zero sum games.  Consensus drives the diminishment of present of future power grabs.

It demands that education be cheap and perfunctory, a baby sitting service run by those who are there to make a profit.  It demands prisons be full so that those who run them can be there to make a profit.  It demands that police be few so that no money is wasted on the useless neighborhoods where crime may

The existence of a vibrant middle class tends to spread the points of access to power and to diminish the authoritarian strains of all factions primed and ready to go forward and commit their ideas of holy unity.

The ideas of a possible existence of a middle class serve a similar function.

The absence of any hope that such a thing as a middle class may be possible leave the fields open to all manners of saviors.

Policies may come and fail.  They may be non too bright and all too corrupt

But they must be open to  establishing the ideas of a sustained, broad based population.  Power in a democracy should look to find a home in the solid middle .... that which may form itself by accident and common interest, by luck and sustained prosperity, by a culture that calls such a thing good.  These were the gifts of a once upon a time.  These are not the gifts of now.  The ground beneath the feet of that dream or illusion is shifting and caving and the new paradigms may find these old tintypes quaint and sentimental.

Since corruption is at the heart and soul of modern American politics it is good that we know this to be so.  This is simply the parallel to the basic corruption of modern everyday American life where might makes right and the best survivors are those who ar adept at best being able to screw whomever they so wish to screw and whomever they are so in a position to screw.  Hard knuckle politics, economics, social intercourse reflect well upon a society happily dancing in fractionalism, daintily pirouetting to the tunes of attack.  A society of many losers is bought off easiest by those able and willing to buy.

When a system is non responsive to the interests of its members it is because there is no actual mechanism that would translate real interests into the ability to act upon same.

Whence there was once a strong and vibrant middle class around to reflect upon and infuse society with the banalities of the bourgeoisie and the stabilities of the safe and secure and the passing appreciations for the good things on earth and the worlds that projected and protected them ....

The world gets smaller.  Globalization gets stronger.  Communications get quicker.  Interactions get more open, less filtered.  Mean levels of active, interactive populations decrease their levels of sophistication, awareness, shading, critical abilities effecting global, national norms, acceptable thought.  Samples affecting global discourse are larger and larger, less evolved, less intellectually curious, aware, questioning, doubting.  Lower standards for acceptable ideas, ideals, principles, minds of value surface ... the dumbing down of  admired behavior rises.

Passions, need, want, revenge, autocracy have greater, unchallenged intellectual worth.  From the bottom floats up mores, ideas that attract.  Values of what was once deemed to be the essences of civilization can no longer be supported.   Based upon the premises that they are those of an enlightened mind, and enlightened population ..... these premise are in doubt.

New parameters have new standards.  Vast ideas of moral, cultural equivalence come without questioning standards.  The mights of guided passions make may rights.  The embraces of those seemingly disenfranchised or less powerful allow for less questioning.  Standards move over time.  Some directions are ominous.

All good capitalists know that a society puts its resources into areas it values, areas that provide efficiency and worth.  Since we, here at home, value the checks and balances of politics and power it follows that our time, treasure, attention and energy be allocated some in that direction.  And it is.  The hammering of partisan virtue and candidates for sale show that the wars of money and effort are there to balance the public trust.  Resource is efficiently allocated and the government is a good power broker and all benefit from the process.

Watchdogs and  kind, media, press, interested parties and such are in an era of access to funds, abilities, cooperation and interest so that they can serve well their function as fourth and/ or fifth branches of government.  They provide bang for the buck opening up the lines of power that push and pull at the all of everyday life.

In the period between the two world wars democracy was in peril.  Lost in the fascist bastions of Germany, Italy, Spain.  Crushed in the Communist bastions of Russia, China, demeaned in militaristic Japan..  A disordered, unruly, economically challenged word was in need of order, stability, trains running on time.

Vague unrest.  Lack of mobility.  Little freedom of thought, movement, little freedom from the slavery of wages, the absence of wages, fears for survival and food, clothing, shelter, the inability to counter the gun ..... the world that drove the populus.  Systems need to be trusted, feared, respected.  The state rests upon the acquiescence of the poor (Chateaubriand).

The poor can be a mob, a downtrodden blight upon the earth, a handy bit of useful fodder for those who need human labor, canon fodder, drones.  A state that makes comfort, survival at the benevolence of others .... those who control access to wealth, freedom of movement, wages, input into the exercise of power  .... this is the state that values a system that can be handled, used, abused, given over to those who know better, who know better by all manners of might making right.

With the absolute paucity of any serious minded public persona we are left with the constant droning on of lame second rate and third rate minds playing little boy and girl fraternity and sorority games with themselves and calling it big person actions.

It may be said that once, in the castle on the hill, our America, aspiring politicos and such wished to be just and good and competent folk, true of heart, of standing, sincere in virtue, learned in form and aspiring to bring along and educate a public who was able to respect said the virtues of a good and learned savant.

It may be said that once, in the castle on the hill, our America, aspiring politicos and such wished to be of a stronger stripe than most, of a more sensible stripe than most, of a more mannered and grounded stripe than most.  Their rewards were in the exercise of the public trust of governance, the acute and measured use of authority, the wisdom of the ages and the management of the hammers of might and righteousness for the better good. The calling was a firm and stirring song.

It may be said that once, in the castle on the hill, our America, aspiring politicos and such wished to be the ones who set the ships of state and municipality and such in directions necessary and smart, prescient and with use of critical facilities that were honed for the exercise of best of men's natures and honed with sharp eye to ferret out the worst.

A democracy allocates power in ways that hopefully spread it around and give voice to as many folk as possible.  These humble gentry need to be courted, bought off, manipulated,, defanged, enraptured, stomped upon depending upon the amount of real input any given population sample may be able to obtain.  Democracy, in itself, is a good form of government in so far as the corruption of same is, in general terms, the least evil form of government ..... that which makes the most in the corrupt society happy in their corruption.

Power seekers in nominal democracies either manipulate the frameworks of same, work effectively outside of the frameworks of same using said frameworks as a blind, or work , generally, within the framework choosing to maximize opportunities, vulnerabilities and flaws in the system or dreaming to reduce same.  The rational power seeker wishes see the framework as an obstacle to be overcome.

Our general run of politicos today are a general run of politicos.  Save for those who are of the general run of power seekers.  The goal of one, the politico is to be a corrupt soul.  The goal of the other, the power seeker, is to wish for a system different from what we got, more efficient in use.  This is the gift of our modern soul.  Power seekers are the ones with the light in their eyes.

We are worried completely and dramatically and faithfully here and all about ... here and all about the state of our knowledge, our educational prowess, the mass ability of our gentry and folk to become bodies with functioning minds and minds with moving parts.

A real and noble ideal worthy of the best of our natures and the better angels of our natures.  We wish smart folk and sensible folk and worthy folk to inhabit our space and time and make life a treasure for us all.

But, sadly, however, tragically, however ... try as we might ... work as we will .... strain as we must ... some things are just beyond the pale.  We strive to emulate the best of all of us in public and private life ... in the worlds of power and thought, opinion and choice.  Tis a sad, hard task.  These are folk gifted from above.  They of the natural order of things are.  That which they have is unattainable.

Fiduciary responsibility demands that business models stand firm in the desire to maximize the profits and gains of the shareholders, the investor class and all of the lucky others who benefit with gains made in pension investments and 401K 's.  The employee is an expense who will get that which the market will bear.  There is no power there save for the trust in the free unfettered market.  There is no counter balance.  Unions are the devils plaything.

Studies of subjects not germane to hive or pigeon hole or numb body occupying space in a dedicated ordered, preset position are not of service to the needs of a workable market place.  Higher learning and a broad based understanding of the dead world around keep the focus off of the dedicated tasks of the task and wage slave.
 
The fall from grace from and advancing society comes when the advancement  of society is defined by the creation of sharpened worker drones.

Power supersedes law.  Law is a tool of power.  When law mitigates the power of some to do as they wish it is serving its function.  When it does not it is not.

Interpretations of law are done by bodies endowed with either the trust or power of a society, or both, to do as is seen fit.  Checks and balances are in the form of other laws or in the the ability to skirt, abuse, dictate or gut law.  Law is the filter through which power flows.  Law is the filter to which power is enforced.  Law is there to calm, to give order, to give legitimacy, to give excuse.  Federal and state law may conflict at the edges of each, may depend upon the ability of enforcement.  Other places may deal with the compliance of the populus, te enforcement of power.
